Starter board sizes
Public AAC seeds every new person with the full Core words board (4 rows × 5 columns). If that’s too dense to start with, two smaller presets carry the same words in the same relative places, so nothing has to be re-learned when the grid grows:
| Preset | Grid | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| First words | 2×3 | The very first taps — a handful of high-power words |
| Small core | 3×3 | Early phrase-building without visual overload |
| Core words | 4×5 | The full starter vocabulary, including social phrases |
You can pick a size in two places:
- Quick setup (the first-run wizard) — step 2, “How many buttons?”.
- Setup → People — the Start from selector when adding a new person.

Because the presets are subsets of one board, moving up a size later keeps every learned position stable — want stays where want has always been. Why the boards lead with words like want and more instead of nouns: see What is a core words board?.
